Measured in pixels with the font and size of Google results. Google may also rewrite the title or description if it finds them a poor match for the search.
Write a title and description people want to click
The title counts in pixels
Google cuts the title around 600 pixels on desktop, 50 to 60 characters depending on the letters. A W takes far more room than an i.
The keyword first
Put the target search at the start of the title: it is what the eye reads first and what Google shows in bold.
A description that answers
In 120 to 155 characters, say what people will find on the page and why they should click on yours rather than another.
One page, one title
Each page has its own title and description. Two identical pages compete with each other in the results.
Google rewrites the title when it finds it too long, too vague or different from the content. A clear, unique title that matches the h1 is almost always kept.
About 155 characters at most on desktop, a little less on mobile. The tool shows you the exact cut-off.
No, it does not count for ranking. It does make people want to click, which brings more visits.
