Test a sitemap.xml

Enter your site or sitemap address: the tool finds it, checks its format and URLs, then tests the response of a sample of pages.

Free, no account, 30 checks a day.

What Google expects from a sitemap

  • Only useful pages

Each URL must answer 200, with no redirect or noindex. A page in error in the sitemap wastes Google’s time.

  • Full URLs

Write each URL in full, in https, on your own domain. Relative URLs or URLs on another domain are ignored.

  • Declared in robots.txt

A Sitemap line in robots.txt lets every search engine find it, not just Google.

  • Linked languages

On a multilingual site, each version declares the others and they point back: that is the condition for hreflang to be used.

  • Right after submission this message is common and goes away within one or two days. If it stays, check that the URL answers here, that the Search Console property is the right one (with or without www) and that your host does not block Googlebot.

  • 50,000 at most and 50 MB at most per file. Beyond that, use an index that lists several sitemaps.

  • Yes if it is accurate: Google uses it to come back to changed pages. A date that changes at every deployment without real changes ends up ignored.
